Walking for Weight Loss Over 40: Is 40 Minutes a Day Enough?

Two older men talking while walking briskly on a park path

Yes, walking 40 minutes a day is enough to help a man over 40 lose weight, but usually not enough on its own. At a brisk pace, a 90 kg man burns roughly 170 to 230 Calories above resting in 40 minutes, about 1,200 to 1,600 extra a week. Pair that with a modest change in eating and you have a real deficit that’s easy on the joints and easy to recover from. Walking also counts toward the aerobic activity that reduces deep belly fat, which makes it one of the best-value fat-loss tools a busy man has.

How many calories walking actually burns

Exercise scientists rate activities in METs, multiples of your resting energy use. The Compendium of Physical Activities lists level walking at 2.8 to 3.4 mph (about 4.5 to 5.5 km/h) at 3.8 METs, and brisk walking at 3.5 to 3.9 mph (about 5.6 to 6.3 km/h) at 4.8 METs (Compendium of Physical Activities).

Using the standard approximation that 1 MET is about 1 Calorie per kilogram per hour, and subtracting what you’d burn sitting anyway, a 40-minute walk works out to roughly:

Your weightModerate pace (3.8 METs)Brisk pace (4.8 METs)
80 kg (176 lb)about 150 Calabout 200 Cal
90 kg (198 lb)about 170 Calabout 230 Cal
100 kg (220 lb)about 185 Calabout 255 Cal
110 kg (243 lb)about 205 Calabout 280 Cal

These are estimates; fitness, terrain and stride change the real number. They’re also why walking alone rarely does the job: 200 Calories is one large latte or a beer and a handful of chips.

Is 40 minutes a day enough?

It depends what you mean by enough.

  • For health: Yes. Forty minutes a day is 280 minutes a week, nearly double the 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity in Canada’s movement guidelines (CSEP).
  • For belly fat: It fits the target. Canada’s obesity guideline supports 30 to 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity on most days to reduce visceral fat and achieve modest fat loss (Wharton et al., 2020).
  • For weight loss on its own: Usually not. The guideline rates the expected fat loss from aerobic activity alone as small. You need the eating side too.

Put simply, 40 minutes of walking plus cutting 250 to 300 Calories from your diet gets most men to a solid deficit without feeling starved.

Walking versus running

Running burns more per minute. In a six-year follow-up of thousands of runners and walkers, the heaviest men lost more weight per unit of energy spent running than walking (Williams, 2013). But running costs more in recovery and joint stress, and many men over 40 with heavy bodies or sore knees can’t run often enough for that advantage to show. Walking is the version you’ll still be doing in six months. If you’re tempted to run, read running for weight loss over 40 first.

How to walk for fat loss

  1. Start where you are. If you walk 15 minutes a day now, build up by 5 to 10 minutes a week until you reach 40.
  2. Use a brisk pace most days. You should be able to talk in short sentences, not sing.
  3. Split it if you need to. Two 20-minute walks count just as much as one 40-minute walk. A lunchtime loop and an after-dinner walk is easy to fit around work.
  4. Add hills or incline later. An incline treadmill or hilly route raises the cost without speeding up.
  5. Carry something heavier occasionally. A loaded backpack makes a regular walk harder. Build up gradually and stop if your back complains.
  6. Keep lifting. Walking burns calories; strength training keeps the muscle. Both belong in the week.

Walking through a Toronto winter

Winter is when walking habits die. Plan the indoor fallback before the first snowfall: a treadmill at the gym, mall walking, or the PATH network downtown if you work in the core. Good boots and ice cleats make outdoor walks possible on most days. Turning your commute into walking or cycling distance is another way to get the minutes in without extra time; see active commuting in Toronto.

The bottom line

Forty minutes of brisk walking a day is enough to make a real contribution to fat loss, easy enough to keep for years, and gentle on joints. It works best paired with a modest change in eating and two or three strength sessions a week. If you prefer to count steps, how many steps a day to lose weight translates this into a daily number. Questions people also ask

Is walking 40 minutes a day enough to lose weight?

It's enough to make a real difference if you pair it with a modest change in eating. On its own it burns roughly 1,200 to 1,900 extra Calories a week for most men, which helps but rarely creates a full deficit if your diet doesn't change.

Is it better to walk faster or longer?

Both raise the calories burned. For most men over 40, adding time is easier on the joints than pushing pace, and a brisk pace where talking takes a little effort is plenty.

Does walking burn belly fat?

Walking burns fat from the whole body, not one area. Regular moderate aerobic activity, which includes brisk walking, is one of the better-supported ways to reduce deep belly fat.

Should I walk before or after meals?

Whenever you'll actually do it. A walk after dinner is easy to stack onto an existing habit and also replaces couch time, which is when a lot of evening snacking happens.
