Personal Training Packages vs Monthly Coaching: Which Is Better Value?

Session packages lower the price per hour the more you prepay, but they lock in money, often come with expiry dates and only cover the hours you’re supervised. Monthly coaching charges for a period of support instead, usually including your program, nutrition, check-ins and messaging. Packages suit men who mainly want supervised workouts and will use every session. Monthly coaching suits men whose results depend on what happens between sessions.

How session packages work

Most trainers price single sessions highest and discount as the pack gets bigger. Two published Toronto examples show the pattern:

ProviderSingle or smallest packMid-size packLargest pack
Toronto Metropolitan University, members$59 a session (5-pack, $295)$49 a session (25-pack, $1,225)$44 a session (50-pack, $2,200)
Iron-Tony, independent trainer$120 single session$99 a session (12-pack)$89 a session (24-pack)

Iron-Tony prices are plus HST (Iron-Tony). TMU’s sessions must be used within a year of purchase, and refunds are available within 10 days of purchase, prorated on sessions used, with a $25 administrative fee (TMU Recreation). Those are exactly the kinds of terms to check with any provider.

The hidden maths of a big pack

A bigger pack is a bet that you’ll use all of it. Run the numbers before buying:

  1. Total cost including tax. A 24-pack at $89 is $2,136, or $2,413.68 with 13% HST.
  2. How long it lasts at your real frequency. At one session a week, 24 sessions is about five and a half months. At two a week, about three.
  3. Expiry. If the pack expires in six months and you’ll only manage one session most weeks, you’re cutting it close.
  4. Your risk. If you stop after 10 sessions, what happens to the other 14? Check the refund terms.
  5. The trainer’s risk. If they leave the gym or close their business, how do you get your money back?

The Toronto personal trainer cost guide has monthly figures at different session prices, and the coaching cost calculator helps you compare totals.

How monthly coaching is priced differently

Monthly or weekly coaching charges for a period of support, not a count of hours. What you get typically includes:

  • A written program for every session, supervised or not.
  • Nutrition targets and strategies.
  • Regular check-ins on your log, weight trend and habits.
  • Messaging between sessions.
  • In-person sessions, in some offers, as part of the package rather than the whole of it.

Because there’s nothing to “use up”, there’s no expiry problem, and you can usually stop at the end of a period. The catch is that you have to engage with the check-ins to get the value.

Questions to ask before you buy either

  • What exactly is included besides the sessions?
  • Is the price before or after 13% HST?
  • When do sessions expire, and can that be extended for illness or travel?
  • What’s the refund policy for unused sessions, or for a month you cancel?
  • Can I pay in instalments?
  • Can I start with something small to test the fit?

How FITWITHIM prices coaching

FITWITHIM doesn’t sell session packs. Each option prices the whole week of coaching:

OptionPriceStructure
Weekly 1:1 Coachingfrom $99 a weekOngoing, week to week
Monthly 1:1 Coaching$499 a monthOngoing, month to month
12-Week Body Transformation$1,499Fixed 12 weeks
12-Week Lifestyle Reset$1,999Fixed 12 weeks
6-Month Full Reset$3,500Fixed six months

How much in-person time is included depends on the option and the support level, and it’s agreed at the free consultation before you pay.

Choosing the better value

Work out what you actually need: supervised hours, or support for the whole week. If it’s hours, buy the smallest pack that gives a reasonable rate and check the expiry. If it’s the whole week, compare monthly coaching options on what’s included, and see FITWITHIM’s coaching options for one way that’s structured.

Questions people also ask

Is it cheaper to buy a big personal training package?

Per session, yes. In total, only if you use every session before it expires. A 50-pack at a lower rate is poor value if you stop after 20 sessions and can't get a refund.

Do personal training sessions expire?

Often, yes. Toronto Metropolitan University's recreation centre, for example, requires sessions to be used within one year of purchase. Ask for the expiry date in writing before you buy any package.

What's the difference between a session pack and monthly coaching?

A session pack buys a number of supervised hours. Monthly coaching buys ongoing support for a period, usually including your program, nutrition guidance, check-ins and messaging, with in-person time as one part of it.

Should I pay for a package up front or in instalments?

Instalments limit how much you have at risk if the trainer leaves or the fit is wrong. Some trainers let you split a larger pack over a few months. Paying by credit card may also give you a dispute route through your card issuer if services aren't delivered.
