Personal training costs the per-session price, times sessions per week, times 4.33 weeks a month, plus 13% HST in Ontario. At $100 a session twice a week, that’s $866 a month before tax and about $979 with HST. The calculator above runs that sum for your numbers and sets it next to FITWITHIM’s monthly coaching and fixed-length programs, so you compare what you’d actually spend over the same stretch of time.
The formula
Monthly cost = price per session × sessions per week × 4.33, then × 1.13 if HST applies.
The 4.33 is 52 weeks divided by 12 months. It matters because trainers quote per session and your bank account works per month. The 13% is Ontario’s harmonized sales tax, listed in the CRA’s GST/HST rates table.
For the coaching options, the calculator converts each price to a monthly equivalent: weekly coaching × 4.33, monthly coaching as listed, and fixed programs divided by their length in weeks, then × 4.33. A 6-month program is treated as 26 weeks.
A worked example
Say a trainer near your office charges $100 a session and you plan to go twice a week for 12 weeks.
| Before HST | With 13% HST | |
|---|---|---|
| Per month (100 × 2 × 4.33) | $866 | $979 |
| 12 weeks (100 × 2 × 12) | $2,400 | $2,712 |
| A year (monthly × 12) | $10,392 | $11,743 |
Now the FITWITHIM options, from the coaching page, as monthly equivalents before tax:
| Option | Listed price | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly 1:1 Coaching | from $99 a week | from about $429 |
| Monthly 1:1 Coaching | $499 a month | $499 |
| 12-Week Body Transformation | $1,499 for 12 weeks | about $541 |
| 12-Week Lifestyle Reset | $1,999 for 12 weeks | about $721 |
| 6-Month Full Reset | $3,500 for 6 months | about $583 |
How to read the result
The cheapest row isn’t automatically the best value. Two sessions a week buys you about eight to nine supervised hours a month and, with many trainers, nothing in between. Coaching typically buys fewer supervised hours but adds a written plan for the days you train alone, nutrition targets and regular check-ins. Before you compare, ask what you need most:
- Someone in the room for every rep. New to lifting, or nervous about technique? Per-session training is worth paying for at the start.
- A plan and someone who notices when you drift. Most men over 35 who stall don’t lack sessions. They lack follow-through between them, which is what monthly 1:1 coaching covers.
- A defined result by a date. A wedding, a health scare, a milestone birthday: a fixed program like the 12-Week Body Transformation has a start, an end and a budget you know in advance.

Limitations
The calculator assumes you attend every session you pay for. Missed sessions you still pay for, and holidays you don’t, will both shift the real number. It doesn’t include a gym membership, parking or a separate nutrition program. Untick HST if your trainer is a small independent who isn’t registered: the CRA only requires registration once sales pass the $30,000 small-supplier threshold. Weekly coaching is priced “from” $99 because the exact rate depends on the support level agreed at the free consultation, so its rows are a floor, not a quote.
The bottom line
Run your real numbers, including tax, over 12 weeks rather than per hour. Then decide which problem you’re paying to solve: technique, follow-through or a deadline. If it’s the second or third, compare the coaching options side by side and book the free consultation to get an exact price.
Questions people also ask
Why multiply by 4.33 and not 4?
A year has 52 weeks, and 52 divided by 12 months is 4.33. Multiplying by 4 undercounts by about one week every three months, which adds up when you're paying per session.
Do personal trainers in Ontario charge HST?
A trainer registered for GST/HST charges 13% in Ontario. A trainer earning under the CRA's $30,000 small-supplier threshold doesn't have to register, so always ask whether a quoted price includes tax.
Is a package of sessions cheaper than paying per session?
Usually the per-session rate drops with bigger packages, but you pay up front and the sessions often expire. Enter the package's per-session rate in the calculator to see the true monthly cost.
What does the calculator not include?
Gym membership, travel time and parking, and any nutrition coaching sold separately. Add those yourself if your trainer works out of a gym you'd otherwise not join.
