Toronto has free outdoor fitness equipment in more than 50 City parks, from Trinity Bellwoods and Riverdale Park East downtown to Thomson Memorial Park in Scarborough and Centennial Park in Etobicoke. The equipment is free and needs no booking, but the City runs no classes on it, so you need your own plan. Pair a station with a staircase, a hill or a trail and you have a full workout that costs nothing.
Where Toronto’s outdoor fitness equipment is
The City of Toronto publishes the full list of parks with outdoor fitness equipment and you can filter its Parks and Community Recreation Centres Map for it. A selection by part of the city:
| Area | Parks with outdoor fitness equipment (address) |
|---|---|
| Downtown and west end | Trinity Bellwoods Park (790 Queen St. W.), Sally Bird Park (194 Brunswick Ave.), Little Norway Park (659 Queens Quay W.), Julius Deutsch Park (40 Cecil St.) |
| East end and the Beach | Riverdale Park East (550 Broadview Ave.), Withrow Park (715 Logan Ave.), Greenwood Park (150 Greenwood Ave.), Woodbine Beach Park, Ashbridges Bay Park |
| Lakeshore west | Sir Casimir Gzowski Park (2001 Lake Shore Blvd.), Budapest Park (1575 Lake Shore Blvd. W.), Lakeshore Boulevard Parklands |

| Etobicoke and York | Centennial Park – Etobicoke (256 Centennial Park Rd.), Stonehouse Park (671 Martin Grove Rd.), Humber Valley Park, Cruickshank Park |
The City’s list doesn’t say what each site includes, and the setup varies from park to park. Walk over and look before you plan a session around one piece.
Pick a spot by what’s around it
The equipment alone is rarely enough for a full session. The best spots are the ones with something else nearby:
- A trail for running between sets. Riverdale Park East sits above the Lower Don, Sunnybrook Park is 154 hectares of ravine land with trails, and the lakeshore parks open onto the Martin Goodman Trail. Run 5 to 10 minutes, do a circuit, repeat. Route ideas are in beginner running routes in Toronto.
- A staircase or hill. Pair a station with a climb for conditioning. The best public stairs are covered in Toronto stair workouts.
- Washrooms and water nearby. Larger parks with recreation centres or field houses usually have them in season. Smaller parkettes usually don’t.
- Distance from your door. A park you can walk to in 10 minutes beats a better one across the city. You’ll use it three times as often.
A 35-minute circuit for any outdoor station
This needs a pull-up bar or a sturdy low bar, a bench and open grass. Do it two or three times a week alongside walking. It lines up with the CSEP guideline of muscle-strengthening work at least twice a week.
| Exercise | Reps | Easier option | Harder option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bench step-ups | 10 each leg | Lower step | Hold a backpack |
| Incline push-ups on a bench or bar | 8–12 | Higher bar | Feet on the bench |
| Inverted rows on a low bar | 6–10 | Feet closer, body more upright | Feet on the bench |
| Split squats | 8 each leg | Hold a post for balance | Rear foot on the bench |
| Dead hang or assisted pull-ups | 20–30 seconds or 3–6 reps | Feet on the ground | Slow lowering |
| Brisk walk or easy jog | 3 minutes | Walk | Run a short loop |
Warm up with five minutes of walking and 10 slow bodyweight squats. Go through the circuit three to four times, resting as long as you need between rounds. When every round feels easy for two sessions in a row, take the harder option on one exercise. For a full program built around bars and bodyweight, see the calisthenics workout for men over 40.
When the weather turns
Toronto’s outdoor season for this kind of training is roughly spring to late fall. Once bars are icy and the grass is frozen, move inside rather than stop.
The cheapest indoor option is a City recreation centre. According to the City’s fitness page, there are more than 40 City weight and cardio rooms, and a one-month FitnessTO membership for weight and cardio rooms costs $33.73 for adults (prices before tax, 2026). Some centres are free centres with no charge for the weight room. At home, a resistance band workout covers the same movement patterns as the park circuit.
Etiquette that keeps the spot pleasant
Outdoor equipment is shared with families, dog walkers and other people training. Wipe down bars if you’ve been sweating on them, don’t camp on one station for 20 minutes, and keep music in your earbuds. If a station is busy, start the circuit at a different exercise and rotate in.
What to do this week
Find the nearest park on the City list, walk there, and do the circuit once at an easy pace. Note which stations exist and what you had to swap. Next session, add a round. If you want a plan that uses the park on fine days and your gym or living room the rest of the year, with someone checking in each week, that’s what weekly coaching is for.
Questions people also ask
Is the outdoor gym equipment in Toronto parks free?
Yes. The equipment is in public parks and there is no fee or booking. The City runs no scheduled classes on it, so you train on your own.
Where is outdoor fitness equipment near downtown Toronto?
Trinity Bellwoods Park on Queen Street West, Sally Bird Park on Brunswick Avenue, Little Norway Park on Queens Quay West and Riverdale Park East on Broadview Avenue all appear on the City's list. Check the Parks and Community Recreation Centres Map for the nearest one.
When is the best time to use outdoor equipment in Toronto?
Spring through late fall, while bars are dry and the ground isn't frozen. Early mornings tend to be quieter than evenings, and a park within walking distance gets used far more than a better one you have to drive to.
What can I do outdoors when there's no equipment nearby?
A park bench, a sturdy railing and a resistance band are enough for step-ups, incline push-ups, split squats, rows and carries. A bodyweight circuit three times a week covers the basics.
