How to Do a Chin-Up: Underhand Pulling for Men Over 40

Man doing pull-ups on an outdoor bar frame among trees

To do a chin-up, hang from a bar with your palms facing you and hands about shoulder width, pull your shoulders down, then pull your chest toward the bar until your chin clears it. Lower all the way down to a straight-arm hang under control. Because your biceps help more than in a pull-up, the chin-up is usually the easier of the two, but it’s harder on the elbows if you rush the volume.

Both build the lats and upper back. Choose the one your joints like, or alternate them by week. If you can’t do either yet, the first pull-up guide lays out the full progression and applies here too.

Why it’s worth doing

The chin-up builds the back, biceps and grip together and makes you move your own body weight. It’s one of the most efficient upper-body exercises you can do with a doorway bar or a playground frame. For many men over 40, getting back to several clean chin-ups is a satisfying marker of being in shape again.

Setup

  • Use a fixed bar high enough that your feet clear the floor with arms straight.
  • Grip underhand, hands about shoulder width, thumbs wrapped around the bar.
  • Start from a dead hang: arms straight, legs together, slight squeeze of the glutes.

Step-by-step

  1. Pull your shoulders down away from your ears without bending your arms.
  2. Bend your elbows and pull your chest toward the bar, elbows travelling down and in front of your body.
  3. Keep your legs still and slightly in front of you; no kicking.
  4. Pull until your chin passes the bar and your upper chest approaches it.
  5. Pause briefly.
  6. Lower over two to three seconds to a full hang.
  7. Reset your shoulders before the next rep.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Half reps from bent arms. Start each rep from straight arms; otherwise you train only the easy half.
  • Craning the neck. Reaching your chin over the bar fakes a finish. Lead with your chest.
  • Kicking or kipping. It shifts the load onto the shoulder joint and hides weakness.
  • Too much volume too soon. Elbow tendons adapt slower than muscles. Add a rep or a set at a time.

Variations and joint-friendly swaps

  • Easier: band-assisted chin-ups, the assisted machine, or an underhand lat pulldown.
  • Harder: weighted chin-ups with a belt, three-second pauses at the top, or very slow negatives.
  • Sore elbows: switch to neutral-grip handles with palms facing each other, reduce weekly volume, and add more rowing like the seated cable row.
  • Sore shoulders: keep a slightly shorter range at the bottom and avoid swinging.
  • Wrist discomfort: rings or straps let the wrists rotate freely.

Programs using chin-ups

Chin-ups appear in the calisthenics workout, the push pull legs plan and the muscle building program. For a plan that rotates grips to keep your elbows healthy, see the DIY programs.

Questions people also ask

Is a chin-up easier than a pull-up?

For most people, yes. The underhand grip lets your biceps help more, so many men get a chin-up before their first pull-up.

How wide should my hands be for chin-ups?

About shoulder width. Much narrower can strain the wrists and elbows; much wider makes the underhand grip awkward.

Are chin-ups bad for your elbows?

They can irritate the inner elbow if you do too many too soon. Build volume slowly, keep a full but controlled range, and switch to a neutral grip if your elbows complain.

What should I do if I can't do a chin-up yet?

Use the same progression as for a pull-up: hangs, slow negatives and band-assisted reps, plus lat pulldowns with an underhand grip.
